The world’s greatest Chess champions will challenge each other at Expo 2020 Dubai, which is scheduled to host the FIDE (Fédération Internationale des Échecs) World Chess Championship from 24 November to 16 December 2021.
At the Expo – which is due to open on 1 October – the reigning world champion, Norway’s Magnus Carlsen, will defend his title against the winner of the FIDE Candidates Tournament, that is scheduled to close at Ekaterinburg, in Russia, in April.
The two players will compete for a prize fund of 2 million Euros. Following a tradition that dates back almost five centuries, the title of best world player will be contended over 14 classical games. The score of the single matches will be summed up to determine the winner of the game.
In 2020, Chess grew enormously in popularity, also thanks to the lockdown and the popular “Queen’s Gambit” TV series.
