Awaiting the outcome on which are the most innovative agri-food companies #Agrifuture, thus came to an end; the contest on good innovation practices was aimed at sustainability and promoted by Santa Chiara Lab of the University of Siena in collaboration with Maker Faire Rome – The European Edition and Italy’s Commissioners’ Office for Expo 2020 Dubai jointly with the support from Rinnovabili.it, as part of the research project “Fixing the Business of Food”.
The participation of the Italian agri-food system in the Dubai 2020 Universal Exposition represents one of the priorities of Italy's broader promotional strategy. With the contribution of the PRIMA Secretariat, research centres and universities, Italy intends to draw international attention to the best practices of innovation implemented in partnership with Euro-Mediterranean countries on issues concerning natural resource management, sustainability of food systems, precision agriculture and the circular economy.
The on-line ceremony to award the winning companies, included the participation as speakers of the President of Santa Chiara Lab Angelo Riccaboni and Italy’s Commissioner General for the upcoming Universal Exposition, Paolo Glisenti.
"The #Agrifuture contest represented an important step towards Expo 2020 Dubai where the themes of innovative agriculture, the circular economy, the protection of natural resources and multidisciplinary skills will be at the forefront of the international debate that will take place between 192 participating nations,”said Glisenti.
Projects of the two winning companies
Sustainable management of water resources and intelligent irrigation are the two innovative practices awarded by the contest.
- The Tuscan start-up Sfera Agricola has developed an active greenhouse, with a closed cultivation cycle and rainwater recovery, which is able to achieve water savings of up to 90% compared to cultivation on soil: an innovation in the field of hydroponics which has enabled the company to build an economic ecosystem, in its own region, with an important impact also on employment, easily scalable in other urban and peri-urban settings.
- Irritec, a Sicilian company among the world leaders in the smart irrigation sector, has created EXXtreme tape ™: an unstoppable light dripline with the largest filtering surface in the world, an innovative and sustainable best practice that allows water to be transported even in contexts where it is it is very scarce.
Both companies adopt and promote innovative solutions and practices that include environmental, economic and social sustainability aspects.
