After more than two weeks of initiatives nationwide, the Sustainable Development Festival came to an end. It was the biggest Italian initiative aimed at mobilising and sensitising citizens, businesses, associations and institutions on economic, social and environmental sustainability issues, in keeping with the UN’s 2030 Agenda and the 17 Sustainable Development Goals.
The speeches included that of Paolo Glisenti, the Commissioner for Italy’s participation in Expo 2020 Dubai, who underlined how at next year’s Universal Exhibition Italy will emphasise – alongside the distinctive and competitive factors of its sustainability production chains – digital humanism, which forms the basis of resilience to future environmental, health, economic and social shocks.

The “Unisustainathon” initiative - Sustainability as an opportunity - also took place in the course of the Sustainable-Development Festival. This hackathon stemmed from the collaboration between the Commissioner’s Office for Italy’s participation in Expo, the Italian Alliance for Sustainable Development (ASviS) and the University Network for Sustainable Development (RUS), its goal being to call to arms bright youngsters from around the globe to propose ideas, thoughts, collaborations and good practices regarding sustainability in the university field in Italy and in the rest of the world.
