The Executive Committee of the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE) has unanimously accepted the request submitted by the government of the United Arab Emirates of postponing Expo 2020 Dubai and retaining its current name.
Moreover, the BIE, which is the governing body of the Universal Exhibitions, has requested the opinion of the member states with regard to the postponement proposal for arriving at a final decision. Italy – a member of the Executive Committee – has confirmed the importance of the country’s participation in the event in 2021.
Given that it is impossible to hold a General Meeting due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the BIE has invited the countries to cast their vote on the proposal between 26th April and 29th May. If the motion is accepted by at least two-thirds of the voting countries, the Universal Exhibition will be postponed by one year, from 1st October 2021 to 31st March 2022.
