“Protection of the cultural heritage” was the focus of a course organised by the Carabinieri at the headquarters of the Abu Dhabi Police in the context of the Italy-United Arab Emirates bilateral cooperation, which ended last week with an official ceremony.
The topic of this course will also be developed during the Universal Exhibition, thanks to a protocol signed between the Italian General Commissioner’s Office of Section for the Expo and the Carabinieri Force. The expertise of the Carabinieri in retrieving archaeological objects in areas of conflict will be an integral part of Italy’s participation in Expo 2020 Dubai.
The course on the protection of cultural heritage, strongly requested and appreciated by the local authorities, was attended by 11 women and men serving with the Tourist Police of Abu Dhabi, to whom the Command Unit for the Protection of Cultural Heritage (TPC) illustrated the model it has established and consolidated in its 50-year-long history, from 1969 to 2019. This model is used to counter the constant threats to the cultural heritage both in Italy and abroad. In particular, the lessons focused on the international conventions concerning the protection of cultural heritage (Hague 1954, Unesco 1970 and Unidroit 1995), the preventive activities conducted to safeguard archaeological sites, consultation of the database of cultural goods unlawfully removed, anti-crime security checks carried out at cultural sites such as museums, galleries and libraries, aimed at preventing theft, robbery and damages, the sensitisation of citizens on the specific issue and the illustration of a few complex investigation activities completed successfully in recent years by the corpsmen of the TPC Command Unit.
In a country where culture is highly valued, the training activities – deemed highly fruitful – are fostering the sharing of the experience acquired by the Carabinieri Force in combating crime against the cultural heritage with the Emirate police, which is responsible for protecting cultural sites and monitoring the buying and selling of works of art.
