Here are the young designers and companies representing Lombardy’s excellence in design and creativity at Expo 2020 Dubai.
Milan, 12 April 2019 – The ceremony proclaiming the 20 winning projects (see attached list) of the Design Competition Expo Dubai 2020 took place in the heart of one the Milan Design Week hubs, Piazza Città di Lombardia at Palazzo della Regione, at the presence of institutions, authorities, sector experts and, above all, plenty of young designers. The call for ideas, promoted by the Lombardy Regional Authority, the Chamber of Commerce of Milan-Monza-Brianza-Lodi and Unioncamere Lombardia, was aimed at young designers and companies as part of the build-up to the 2020 Universal Exhibition in Dubai.
The initiative, currently in its seventh edition, focused on the devising of innovative projects and the creation of the relative prototypes, stemming from the collaboration between Lombardy-based companies and designers under 35 years of age. The participants were asked – in accordance with the Expo 2020 theme, ‘Connecting Minds, Creating the Future’ – to develop design ideas revolving around the ‘Connecting Spaces’ theme, referring both to design objects to connect spaces that reflect Italy’s artisan tradition interpreted in an innovative way (Innovative Crafting), and spaces connected through digital technologies, IoT, new domotic technologies applied to design and information design (Digital Connecting Spaces), or even temporary structures to connect people (Design for Human Connection).
‘Events like the Design Competition’ – commented the Regional Councillor for Tourism, Territorial Marketing and Fashion of the Lombardy Regional Authority – ‘once again prove how important the design sector is for the Lombardy Region. The intelligence and desire to emerge of many young professionals represent the future of a strategic sector for the economy of Lombardy and Italy. My goal as councillor is to ensure that Lombardy can become a sort of design “Silicon Valley”, a design thinking excellence hub to develop successful innovations and spread ideas and planning on a global scale. Design merges artisan know-how and creativity, innovation and a passion for art. And in this field, Lombardy is the kingpin at a national level’.
‘The Design Competition’ – commented Sergio Rossi, the Deputy Secretary-General of the Chamber of Commerce of Milan-Monza-Brianza-Lodi – ‘affords institutions, universities and entrepreneurial associations the opportunity to continue uniting their forces. A virtuous path that continues to benefit the growth of Milan’s economy and which we desire confirming for a successful presence at Expo 2020 Dubai’.
The twenty winning projects of the Design Competition, which were also rewarded with a subsidy of up to 20,000 Euro for companies engaged in creating the respective prototypes, will be displayed at Expo 2020 Dubai, to be held from 20 October 2020 to 10 April 2021, to represent Lombardy’s excellence in the design and creativity sectors.
And ‘Design will take centre stage at the Dubai Expo’ – commented Paolo Glisenti, the General Commissioner for Italy at Expo 2020 Dubai, who attended the ceremony to illustrate to the public the strategy for Italy’s presence at the Expo and welcome the 20 teams selected to display their creations at the Universal Exhibition – ‘and is an essential element to connect minds and skills which generate shared and diffused social, economic, cultural value’.
The winning teams will have the chance to display their creations in important venues in Italy and during events dedicated to design and present them to the Commissioners involved in the Country Pavilions and to the Emirati market.
