The President of the Italian National Olympic Committee (CONI), Giovanni Malagò, and the Commissioner General for Italy at Expo 2020, Paolo Glisenti, signed a memorandum of understanding in Rome – in the Hall of Torches at the Foro Italico – that defines the collaboration between the two entities in view of Italy’s presence at the 2020 Universal Exhibition in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
The exhibition will also put the spotlight on Italian sport – as a crucial factor for the country – through the active participation in a series of initiatives and events planned by the Commissioner’s Office on the theme “connecting minds, creating the future”, developed by bringing together countries, continents, cultures and religions.
CONI and the Commissioner General share the view that EXPO 2020 constitutes an opportunity to promote physical exercise and sport at all ages, alongside active and sustainable mobility, through the creation of joint initiatives in Italy thanks to numerous partnerships between CONI and public and private, national and international institutions.
Below are some of the main objectives defined in the memorandum of understanding:
- promoting and enhancing at EXPO 2020 Dubai awareness on physical activity as a strategic management model geared towards prevention, sustainability and a healthy lifestyle;
- transforming the formative and educational aspect of sport into a pivotal element of Italy’s participation at EXPO 2020 Dubai, as they help to foster responsible citizenship in the new generations;
- promoting a multidisciplinary model of sport capable of blending recreational-motor activities with criteria and methods geared towards fostering personal development, so that sport can become a decisive factor for prevention, well-being and social development, as well as a means for diffusing the principles of responsible and inclusive citizenship, lawfulness, fair play and respect for rules.
By signing this memorandum of understanding, the Italian National Olympic Committee aims to tangibly contribute – as a strategic partner of the Commissioner General – to strengthening and enhancing Italy’s participation at EXPO 2020, by promoting shared topics in the social, production and institutional fabrics.
